The first UK exhibition dedicated to the father of American landscape painting is sure to inspire artists working in the genre – and everyone interested in amazing paintings.
It’s a rare chance to see Thomas Cole’s epic works depicting the vast wilderness of the American Northeast, including his masterpiece The Oxbow and the iconic painting cycle The Course of Empire.
Running alongside the exhibition at London’s National Gallery is a free show revealing internationally renowned American pop artist Ed Ruscha’s contemporary take on Cole’s painting cycle. But instead of depicting verdant wilderness, Ruscha focuses on Los Angeles’ sprawling, industrial landscapes.
