Today, gold is still mined in the Yukon, an area in the far north of western Canada that boasts vast, scenic wilderness and greater numbers of wildlife than people.
Occurring naturally, placer gold can be found as powder dust, as flakes, or most rarely, in nugget form. While typically worn into small flakes or powder dust by water, gold nuggets are prized for their size, weight, purity and aesthetic value.
They can be found in the tailings piles of early mining operations, especially those left by gold mining dredges.
Yukon’s Klondike gold is exported all over the world. Small flakes and dust are melted into bars, while nuggets – typically ranging in purity from 79 per cent to 89 per cent – are prized in their natural form.
