Even before you walk through the door of Burham Cottage, you will feel a sense of calm as the motorways give way to Dartmoor roads and the countryside opens up around you.
Burham Cottage is set in a peaceful little village where you can step out the front door and wander in any direction to discover a world of walking wonderland which the dog will particularly appreciate. Find the Black Brook and meander the water’s edge before stumbling into the local 15th Century church house inn on the village green.
If you’re feeling energetic, take yourself along the disused Dousland to Princetown railway track which has been transformed for walkers and cyclists. The views are well worth it, from woodland pathways to moorland tors, looking out to Burrator Lake and over the Walkham Valley – the granite around here was used to build London Bridge. If you can’t get enough of established walks, head out on Drake’s Trail which takes you on the old rail track between Tavistock and Plymouth with a plethora of wildlife to keep you company along the wooded valley and open moorland ways.

Further afield, you will be spoilt for choice with National Trust sites, walking trails, panoramic views and ancient Dartmoor mysteries to explore. Closer to home, the Merrivale Stones are easy to get to compared to some of the area’s many mysterious standing stones, and an atmospheric place to experience sunrise or sunset. Or you could stick to the historic market towns hiding independent shops and mouth-watering local produce.
Wherever your adventures take you, collapse back into the comfort of your eco-friendly cottage, with solar panels adding a modern touch to this classic country terraced property and making the slate floors toasty for tired toes. Cook up a treat in the fully equipped kitchen before firing up the woodburner and settling down with a hot toddy, cuddled up close on cooler evenings. Damp dogs can warm weary bones once you have hosed them off in the handy dog-washing-cum-outdoor-utility room.
Retire to the pretty cottage bedrooms for a well-earned rest, ready for the next day’s adventure. Or a lazy brunch on the terrace if the weather’s kind…
