Volcanic trails
Most Nicaraguan journeys begin with a brief stay in its capital, Managua. Earthquakes have shorn it of historic architecture, so head for its malecón (waterfront) and the volcanic Chiltepe Peninsula Natural Reserve, with its twin azure crater lakes, Apoyeque and Xiloá.
A little further south, Granada oozes photogenic buildings. Named after its Spanish counterpart, its clutch of churches, cobblestone lanes and pastel-shaded facades mean there’s a photo-op around every corner. Its location on the banks of Lake Nicaragua serves it well, too. Here, take a boat trip around the 365 lava-hewn islets formed from the spurts of Mombacho – a microcosm of Nicaragua’s volcano-defined land – and spy rich birdlife (including cormorants, parrots, herons) overhead.
Colonial charms
Formed by two volcanoes, Lake Nicaragua’s major island, Ometepe (pictured above) is swathed in cloud forest and studded with waterfalls and lagoons. When treading its tropical wilds you’ll be joined by monkeys and the birds’ sunset chatterings, while pre-Columbian petroglyphs offer insights into the island’s past.
Finish your Nicaragua experience with a trip to colonial hub, León, which blends religious grandeur with students’ buzz. One of the country’s symbols, volcanic Cerro Negro, looms nearby: enjoy a toboggan ride skimming its ashy slopes. Just one more adventure in Nicaragua, a crowd-free land of culture, historic architecture and natural scapes – and Journey Latin America is best placed to help you unlock its wild
