Inntravellers may already know how Cava got its name, but when was the last time you tasted its fruity aromas? Think white fruits like apple and pear, notes of white flowers and refreshing citrus tones, which pair perfectly with anything from cannelloni to escudella stew. Alternatively, you can wash down an assortment of cold meats, Spanish cheeses and freshly baked bread, any time from breakfast or brunch to dinner.
But the very best time to pour yourself a glass of Catalonia’s finest sparkling wine? That would have to be when you’re paying 'Homage to Catalonia' on our self-guided journey or on our cycling holiday through ‘Catalonia’s ‘Cava Country’ – after a day spent pedalling amid the rolling hills and vineyards of Penedès.

Here, not far from the coast, indigenous varieties of Macabeu and Xarel-lo grapes are carefully plucked from the vines – the Parellada varieties are harvested from the tail end of August to September. From this, comes the Codorniu 'Cuvée Barcelona 1872', of which we have three delicious bottles to be won. Codorniu use traditional wine-making techniques and tanks, topped with ceramic tiles, to create their Cava.
Want to know more? Well, these particular bottles of Cava were not only stored in stone cellars (cavas) for nine months beneath Spain’s ‘Cava Country’, but their very design draws inspiration from Barcelona’s modernist stainglass windows. They commemorate the year that Codorniu founder Joseph Raventós first crafted this Brut Cav 1872.
The competition closes on 20th March 2017 at 4pm.
