For a chance to see some truly jaw-dropping needlework, get along to the American Quilt Museum to see Breaking the Pattern by Joyce Petschek. This Tuscany based artist has been doing Bargello needlework all her life and here she frees it from its strict, mathematical confines and works entirely on intuition to create wall textiles and reworked antique furniture that dazzle with rich and luminous colour. Some of her works can take up to a year to complete and begin with the selection of the finest silk threads.
