You all know I love jewellery and you may recall I reviewed a lovely personalised pendant last year. Well I’ve just received a Mother’s Day treat from KAYA and I love that it’s a little different from the norm.

I’d like to tell you that I had that planned from conception, but even I’m not that organised. There’s also an option to just have family names and no birthstones at all, and you can buy a necklace to go with your pendant, should you so wish. I’ve got my own chain, which I knew would work perfectly with my new pendant.

You all know that Monkey’s reading journey has been a long one. He loves books, just not the reading of them. He recently moved up another band in his school reading books, and I know that free reading chapter books are on the horizon. So I’m trying to put more emphasis on me reading him chapter books at home, than picture books, to form part of that transition. We’ve been enjoying The Mad Moon Mission lately, and it’s really rather good.
Aimed at children aged 7 years and over, The Mad Moon Mission is written by Andrew Guile and features over 150 illustrations from Curt Walstead. This is the second installment in the The Amazing Adventures of Skinny Finny and Super Spy Wobblebottom. We’ve not read the first book, The Crazy Christmas Caper, but it hasn’t hindered the enjoyment as we’ve read The Mad Moon Mission together.
Published through Matador at the end of January, we meet up with Skinny Finny and his twin brother Tubby. They’ve been reunited with their parents and have just moved to a plush apartment overlooking The Shard, in the centre of London. It would appear that the first book must have followed the boys as they rescued their parents from the evil clutches of Dr Buttscratcher. In The Mad Moon Mission, the parents have promised the boys that they won’t leave them again, but it isn’t long before they are called away on another secret mission. This time, it relates to something secret in space. The boys, who don’t always see eye to eye, are disappointed to say the least and want an adventure of their own.
There’s lots of funny moments as Skinny Finny and Tubby team up with the British Agent, Super Spy Wobblebottom to thwart their arch-enemy Dr Buttscratcher. Let’s face it, the character names alone have been enough to have my 7-year-old Monkey in fits of giggles. The writing is perfect for children of that age group and he’s loved me reading it to him.
Can the boys save the world from Dr Buttscratcher and his plans for world domination? With messages of good and evil as well as loyalty and revenge, The Mad Moon Mission is a full on action packed read, and one we can give a big thumbs up to. As a child I can remember loving rub down transfer books, but I haven’t seen one for a long time. It’s certainly not something that my 7-year-old has ever seen before. When Usborne Publishing contacted me about the recently published The Wild Garden, it brought back so many memories from my childhood. I couldn’t wait to see the book for myself and introduce Monkey to the concept of rub down transfer books.
The Wild Garden is the sort of book that you can enjoy completing alone or as a shared family activity (recommended for children aged 5 years and over). It would make a lovely birthday or Mother’s Day present too in my opinion. We all need to take some time out of our busy lives at some point and it’s been wonderful to immerse ourselves in this activity over the last few days.
The 24 page books comes with some lovely transfer sheets full of flowers, butterflies, frogs and other mini beasts. The transfer sheets are stored in an envelope inside the front cover of The Wild Garden.
As you go through the pages of the book, you find one page with a line drawing to colour in and on the opposite page, the colour version, all ready to apply transfers to.
With a wide selection of scenes to complete, my son and I decided we’d work on The Summer Meadow, and add poppies and cow parsley to the picture along with a few mini beasts.
I explained the concept of rub on transfers, basically to place your transfer in the required place colour side up and then you colour over it with a biro. Once completed, gently peel away the paper and the transfer is left in place on the page. My son has been fascinated by the experience. Little things.
I’ve been really impressed with how considered Monkey has been, with both the placement of the transfers and the actual rubbing process. It’s been lovely to watch him at work. The Wild Garden is providing us with some much-needed chill out time after school, and a lovely activity to work on together. We complete a little detail every day and are in no hurry to complete each scene.
More cow parsley is required apparently, but not without my son’s supervision. Priced at £12.99, The Wild Garden really is a lovely book to enjoy and treasure once completed. Available from the Usborne Publishing website, where you can find a wonderful selection of books for all ages. We have been fans since Monkey was a baby, they really are quality books.
